Shift Focus to Other Search Engines?

posted on February 22, 2009

Right now, many people are focusing on Google. Everyone wants to have a good rank on Google’s search engine and everyone wants traffic from Google. What about the other search engines?

Other Search Engines

Many, many, people use Google as their primary search engine. It’s the default search engine for a lot of browsers. It’s the largest search engine in the world.

That doesn’t mean that you have to optimize for Google, though. I’ll admit it: I haven’t really paid attention to other search engines. I’ve been focusing on Google. It has been working, too. I get a decent amount of traffic from Google each day. I think that I can get more, though.

If your website is optimized for search engines, it’s optimized for search engines. It doesn’t really matter what search engine it is. I do believe, however, that you can do little things to improve your rankings with specific search engines. If you focus on a search engine, check out your position on the SERPs all of the time, and overall you pay more attention to that search engine, your website will probably do best on that search engine.

So right now, most people are doing what I said above for Google. People are checking their rankings all of the time, looking for good keywords, etc. What if, instead of optimizing for Google, we choose a different search engine? Other search engines don’t get as much traffic, but they are still massively used. It’s probably easier to rank well on other search engines, since everyone is focusing on Google.

Yahoo! is #7 in our list of websites that changed the world.

Yahoo is a good search engine. Why not focus on Yahoo?

I’m definitely not the first person to suggest this. Many people are doing this already. Some are focusing on Yahoo!, some MSN, some other search engines. This is not an original idea. I’m just writing this post to try to inform people that’s it’s possible. You don’t have to go with Google, there are plenty of other search engines out there.

Have any ideas? Can you explain this better than I just (tried) to do? Please leave a comment! I look forward to reading your thoughts.
