Instantly Check if a Website is Web 2.0

posted on January 15, 2009

While surfing the web, I noticed a cool little tool. http://web2.0validator.com/ allows you to check if a website is ‘Web 2.0′ or not.

Web 2.0 validator will do a scan of the inputted URL and then check for multiple Web 2.0 trends. I’m pretty sure that it was created just for fun, and the developers don’t actually believe that there is a way to tell if a website is Web 2.0. It’s still cool to use though.

A few of my favorite trends are:

Denies the existance of Rocky V ? No
Refers to the Web 2.0 Validator’s ruleset ? No
Uses the word meme? No

The Web 2.0 Validator allows you to check if a website is 'Web 2.0'.

The Web 2.0 Validator allows you to check if a website is 'Web 2.0'.

These are pretty random but funny none-the-less. The web2.0validator has a pretty big list of checks similar to these (well, the rest are a bit more serious). According to the information on the homepage, the different checks are user-generated.

In conclusion

There is no way to tell is a website is ‘Web 2.0′. I’m not even sure if a website can be ‘Web 2.0′. Web 2.0 is a series of trends on the web that are based around user interaction, simple design, etc. Is a website that follows some (or all) of these trends considered to be ‘Web 2.0′? Who decides how many trends the website has to follow to be considered ‘Web 2.0′?

In my opinion, websites aren’t ‘Web 2.0′. Websites may follow Web 2.0 trends, but the websites themselves are not Web 2.0.
